Integration of Optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar Imagery for Improving Crop Mapping in Northwestern Benin, West Africa

چکیده
Crop mapping in West Africa is challenging, due to the unavailability of adequate satellite images (as a result of excessive cloud cover), small agricultural fields and a heterogeneous landscape. To address this challenge, we integrated high spatial resolution multi-temporal optical (RapidEye) and dual polarized (VV/VH) SAR (TerraSAR-X) data to map crops and crop groups in northwestern Benin using the random forest classification algorithm. The overall goal was to ascertain the contribution of the SAR data to crop mapping in the region. A per-pixel classification result was overlaid with vector field boundaries derived from image segmentation, and a crop type was determined for each field based on the modal class within the field. A per-field accuracy assessment was conducted by comparing the final classification result with reference data derived from a field campaign. Results indicate that the integration of RapidEye and TerraSAR-X data improved classification accuracy by 10%–15% over the use of RapidEye only. The VV polarization was found to better discriminate crop types than the VH polarization. The research has shown that if optical and SAR data are available for the whole cropping season, classification accuracies of up to 75% are achievable. OPEN ACCESS Remote Sens. 2014, 6 6473

Rice Monitoring Using ENVISAT ASAR Data: Preliminary Results of a Case Study in the Mekong River Delta, Vietnam
ABSTRACT: Vietnam is one of the world’s largest rice exporting countries, and the fertile Mekong River Delta at the southern tip of Vietnam accounts for more than half of the country’s rice production. Unfortunately, a large part of rice crop growing time coincides with a rainy season, resulting in a limited number of cloud-free optical remote sensing images for rice monitoring. Synthetic apert...
متن کاملClassifier Fusion of High-resolution Optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (sar) Satellite Imagery for Classification in Urban Area
This study concerned with fusion of synthetic aperture radar and optical satellite imagery. Due to the difference in the underlying sensor technology, data from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical sensors refer to different properties of the observed scene and it is believed that when they are fused together, they complement each other to improve the performance of a particular applicati...

متن کاملUsing dual-polarised L-band SAR and optical satellite imagery for land cover classification in Southern Vietnam: comparison and combination
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical images contain different types of land cover information. Moreover, whereas like-polarisation SAR images are predominately influenced by surface backscattering properties, the volume backscattering characteristics of surfaces are well represented by SAR cross-polarisation data. Hence, combined use of likeand cross-polarisation data could enhance the la...
متن کاملApplication of Displacement Map Produced by Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar Technique in Height Datum Determination in the Subsidence Area
Damages due to subsidence such as destruction of watering system and agricultural fertile soil, wells increasing, damage to the roads, bridges and high ways and disordering in the water and gas supplying usually are irreparable and costly. As a huge amount bench marks of height network of Iran are placed in the subsidence area, changing their heights is a challenge for NCC. In this study, a new...
